Accepting Public Comments on Proposed Hunting and Fishing Program Changes

The FWS is seeking public review and comment on the proposed opening or expansion of hunting and/or fishing. The public is invited to review the draft documents, including draft plan(s), compatibility determination(s) as appropriate, and environmental compliance documentation. The draft documents are available through the Federal Register docket number: FWS–HQ–NWRS–2026–1223.

The comment period on the proposed hunting and sport fishing regulations across Service-managed lands and waters will stay open for 30-days from May 27 through June 26, 2026. Please submit your comments directly through the Federal Register

The comment period on the Environmental Assessment for actions at this field station will stay open for 30 days from May 27 through June 27, 2026. Please submit your comments via email to [email protected] with the name of the refuge or hatchery in the subject line.

Come visit and explore all the Refuge has to offer!  Activities include:  hunting, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, photography, paddling, and more.  While hunters and fishermen use the whole refuge, most of the other wildlife related recreational activities are concentrated in the Headquarters unit.

Directions to the Headquarters Unit

From I-20: Take the Hamilton Road exit (20A) and turn south on Hamilton Road toward the casino. Turn left onto the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway and travel 6 miles south on parkway, the refuge entrance will be on your right. 

From southern Bossier Parish: Take Barksdale Blvd/Hwy 71 to the stop light intersection of Sligo Road by Parkway High School. Turn right (west) onto the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway extension (Sligo extension) and drive approximately 2.5 miles to the entrance of Red River Refuge (on the left).

From southern Shreveport: Cross over the Jimmie Davis/70th Street Bridge heading toward Bossier City and immediately take the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway ramp on the right.  At the stop sign turn left onto the parkway and drive south approximately 0.7 mile to the refuge entrance (on the right).

Red River NWR is part of the North Louisiana Refuges Complex.  The Complex headquarters is located at D'Arbonne National Wildlife Refuge.

Rules and Policies

We welcome visitors but please bear in mind that this is a National Wildlife Refuge and we may have different rules and regulations than national, state and city parks as well as Wildlife Management Areas managed by the state.  Hunters and Fishermen need to consult the Public Use Regulations Brochure for specific rules and regulations.
