The FWS is seeking public review and comment on the proposed opening or expansion of hunting and/or fishing. The public is invited to review the draft documents, including the draft plan(s), compatibility determination(s) as appropriate, and NEPA compliance documentation. The draft documents are available through the Federal Register docket number: FWS–HQ–NWRS–2026–1223.
The comment period on the proposed hunting and sport fishing regulations across Service-managed lands and waters will stay open for 30-days from May 27 through June 26, 2026. Please submit your comments directly through the Federal Register.

Visitors may participate in a variety of activities including nature photography, wildlife observation, hunting, fishing and boating. The refuge has more than 40 miles of trails and boardwalks open for hiking and biking, as well as a self-guided driving tour, two lake-front piers, and a boat ramp.
Trails
Visitors may enjoy the refuge trails through four entrances: Portsmouth Ditch Entrance, Jericho Lane Entrance, Washington Ditch entrance, or Railroad Ditch Entrance (also known as Lake Drummond Wildlife Drive). Each entrance boasts several miles of road-trails for hiking or biking. Some entrances also include interpretive signage, elevated boardwalks, and piers.
Refuge trails are open sunrise to sunset. Lake Drummond Wildlife Drive hours vary seasonally.
In partnership with Kids in Parks, the refuge also boasts a 1.5 mile TRACK trails loop at the Portsmouth Ditch Trailhead.
Rules and Policies
There are lots of fun, interesting, and educational things you can do on the refuge. Keep in mind, if an activity is not wildlife related and doesn’t help in the protection or understanding of wildlife or their habitat, there are probably refuge rules governing this activity. Please check with the refuge management before participating in an activity that could harm the environment or yourself. There are plenty of activities at Great Dismal Swamp for you to enjoy.
