On October 2nd, the anniversary of the National Trails System Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the National Park Foundation announced over $1 million in grants to national rivers and trails across the nation. Twenty-three grants have been awarded to address a variety of conservation challenges, explore research opportunities, and improve interpretation and educational materials, all of which contribute to the health of natural lands and waters and those around them.
These grants directly benefit national scenic, national historic, or national recreation and water trails and wild and scenic rivers with projects such as supporting U.S. military veteran volunteers in trail maintenance and conservation projects on the Arizona National Scenic Trail in Saguaro National Park, monitoring bear movements and behaviors in and around the Wekiva Wild and Scenic River, and repairing deep washouts to ensure sustainability of the Historic Railroad Tunnel National Recreation Trail located in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. These projects not only help support ecosystem resilience but also foster community engagement and education. As we face increasing environmental challenges, such initiatives become essential for protecting our special rivers and trails now and in the future.
